PDF to OFX Converter for Quicken and Accounting Apps
Convert PDF and scanned statements into OFX, the Open Financial Exchange format that personal finance and accounting software reads as if the file came straight from the bank, with every statement checked against its printed balances first.
A standards based OFX file
OFX is the most widely supported structured format for bank data. It describes the account, the statement period and each transaction in a fixed set of fields, which is why so many programs can import it without any column mapping.
- Account section with account type (checking, savings, money market or credit line) and the account number ending you choose
- Statement start and end dates taken from the statement period
- Ledger balance and balance date from the verified closing balance
- For each transaction a unique FITID, posted date, signed amount and transaction type
- Payee name in the name field and the full bank wording in the memo field
- Check numbers on check rows and reference numbers where the statement prints them
- Credit card statements exported as a credit card account, with charges negative and payments positive
OFX version and encoding
Files are written in the SGML based OFX 1.0 style that older desktop software expects, or in the XML based OFX 2 style for newer importers. Characters are encoded so payee names with accents or ampersands import cleanly.
Converting PDF to OFX
- Upload the statements, from a single month to several years of one account
- Review the extracted transactions and the balance check result for each statement
- Choose OFX, set the account type, account number ending and OFX version
- Download one file per statement or one combined file per account
Ledger balance you can trust
An OFX file includes a ledger balance, and most programs display it next to the register after import. If a transaction was dropped during extraction, that figure and the register total stop agreeing, and the user is left to work out why.
StatementsConverter tests each statement before the OFX file exists: opening balance, plus deposits, minus withdrawals, has to equal the printed closing balance.
Only then is the closing balance written as the ledger balance. A statement that fails is flagged on its page with the affected rows, so the gap is fixed in the editor rather than discovered inside the finance app.
Where OFX files are used
Quicken imports OFX and its own QFX variant through the file import menu for Web Connect files, and you match the file to an existing account or create one during import.
Many accounting and personal finance programs, as well as budgeting tools and audit software, accept OFX through an import statement or import bank file option, usually without asking you to map columns.
QuickBooks also reads OFX style data, but it expects its own QBO flavor with a bank identifier, so use the PDF to QBO converter for QuickBooks Online and Desktop.
Older programs and some Quicken versions still read QIF instead, which the PDF to QIF converter produces from the same upload.
Because every row has a stable FITID, importing a file that overlaps a period already loaded does not double the transactions in programs that honor the ID.
OFX for litigation and audit work
Forensic accountants rebuilding years of activity often need a format that a review tool can ingest without a template. A combined OFX file per account, with verified balances per period, gives a clean trail from paper statement to analysis. For spreadsheet review of the same history, an Excel export of the PDF bank statement sits alongside it.
OFX export on Professional and Business
OFX is part of Professional at 149 USD a month, or 74 USD a month billed yearly, together with QBO, QIF and Xero files, 1,500 pages a month and batches of up to 100 files.
Starter includes Excel and CSV. Business adds API access, SSO and retention controls. See pricing.
Is OFX the same as QFX
QFX is the variant Quicken uses, and both share the same structure of accounts, balances and transactions.
